Whip up Your Own Sports Drink
by Darla Carter
Nancy Clark, a sports nutritionist and author in the Boston
area, talked about homemade sports drinks in a recent interview, saying that they don't
taste exactly the same as the famous "ades" but basically do the same job.
Here is a recipe from her Nancy Clark's Sports Nutrition
Guidebook (Human Kinetics, 2003):
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup hot water
- 1/4 cup orange juice (not concentrate) plus 2 tablespoons of
lemon juice
- 3 1/2 cups cold water
In the bottom of a pitcher, dissolve the sugar and salt in
the hot water. Add the juice (you can use any kind for flavoring) and the remaining water.
Chill and drink.
If you don't have time to whip up this recipe, you could
just rely on water and GORP (good old raisins and peanuts) or salty foods and water, Clark
said.
